Automatic pinsetters, bright lights and a late bar. Bring an American night out to a British bypass.
The first ten-pin centres open in 1960 with machines that reset the pins by themselves, and for a few years the queues go round the block. The machines are leased from their American makers, so the lanes cost money every month whether they are full or not. When the novelty passes, the centres that survive are the ones that became somewhere to eat, drink and hold a league night.
