Most of the work is quiet and lawful: serving writs, tracing debtors and missing relatives, and checking that an applicant is who he says he is. Until the law changes in 1971 a divorce needs proof of fault, and enquiry agents supply the evidence, sometimes staged. Clients pay by the day plus expenses, and a name for discretion is the whole business.
