Cloth by the yard, buttons by the card. Dress the town by the yard, and sell the thread to finish it.
Most clothes are still made at home or by a dressmaker, so the draper sells the cloth, the lining, the buttons and the pattern, and the haberdashery counter sells everything that holds them together. Stock is bought a season ahead and dates if the colours turn. From 1941 cloth needs coupons as well as money, and after the war ready-made clothes slowly take the trade away.
