Since July 2020 they have been legal on the road only in trial areas, run by operators the council chooses, with speed limits, parking bays and rules on who may ride. The scooters are cheap and the batteries are not, the vandals are tireless, and the permit can be taken away or handed to a rival when the trial is extended.
