Handbills, letterheads, tickets and wedding cards. Print whatever the town needs by Friday.
A jobbing printer takes the small orders: tickets for the dance, bills for the auction, letterheads for the solicitor and the parish magazine every month. Type is set by hand and locked into the press, and the compositors belong to a union that sets the rate and the number of apprentices. The work is steady, local and paid late, and each new process, from offset litho to the photocopier, takes a piece of it.
