An independent opticians makes almost nothing on the sight test, NHS funded or not, and almost everything on spectacles, lenses and contact lens plans. Two numbers decide the year: how many people who are tested go on to buy, and what they spend when they do. The test is exempt and the glasses are standard rated, so the VAT has to be apportioned on every sale.
