Charter flights to the sun, sold with a hotel. Fill every seat to Spain before the aircraft leaves.
In 1950 a tour operator fills a war-surplus Dakota with holidaymakers for a fortnight under canvas in Corsica, and the package holiday is born. A charter airline flies for tour operators, or for its own, at load factors scheduled airlines never reach. Until 1960 the state corporations hold the scheduled routes, so the independents fly charters, and the price of fuel, the pound and the summer decide the year.
