Taxis that drive themselves, with a safety driver for now. Run a taxi service where the car does the driving.
A self-driving taxi fleet owns its cars, fits them with cameras, radar and computers, and sells rides through an app. The Automated Vehicles Act 2024 set out how a car can be authorised to drive itself, and from May 2026 an operator can apply for a permit to carry passengers. Until that permit comes, a safety driver sits in every car, so the wage bill of a taxi firm arrives with the costs of a technology company.
