Cabs, drivers and a radio room. Answer the phone and put a car on the door.
A private hire firm is an operator licence, a booking system and enough drivers to cover a Saturday night, and the council decides who may drive and in what vehicle. Traditionally the firm takes a weekly settle or a commission from self-employed drivers rather than fares, so the real question is how many cars you can keep on the circuit. Since the ride-hailing apps arrived, in London in July 2012 and in most cities by 2014, the local firm has been squeezed from both ends: drivers can work for anyone, and passengers compare prices on a phone.
