Building, laying up and repairing boats. Build the boat, lay it up each winter and mend it each spring.
A yard on the water builds a few boats to order and looks after many more: hauling out, painting, repairs and winter storage. The yachting trade pays in spring, the fishing boats pay when the catch does, and building a boat to order is a long job paid in stages. In the war the yards build launches and landing craft for the Admiralty, and after it they build for a new generation of sailors in glass fibre.
