Acids, alkalis, dyes and plastics by the ton. Make the chemicals every other industry cannot work without.
A chemical works makes things other industries use: alkali for soap and glass, acids, dyes, fertilisers and, from the 1930s, the first plastics. Plants are expensive, run continuously and are regulated for what leaves the chimney. The money is in the new product nobody else can make yet, and the danger is in the process that fails.
