Deep coal, drift mines and the men who dig them. Win coal from the seam, and bring every man up safely.
A colliery sells coal by the ton at prices it rarely sets, from a seam that gets harder to work the further it runs. The costs are wages, timber and pumping, and output depends on the men, the machines and the geology, in about that order. Safety law is strict and the union is strong. On 1 January 1947 nearly every colliery in the country passes to the National Coal Board.
