Base load from a reactor on the coast. Run a reactor that must never stop being safe.
Calder Hall opens in 1956, the first nuclear station anywhere to supply a national grid on an industrial scale, and for forty years every British reactor is run by the state. From 1996 private operators run the newer stations and sell base-load power into a market. A station costs a fortune to build, little to fuel and a great deal to take down, and the regulator can stop it at any time.
