Local radio paid for by advertising. Talk to a city every morning and sell the minutes between the records.
The Sound Broadcasting Act 1972 allows the first legal commercial radio, and LBC and Capital open in London in October 1973. A station is a transmitter contract, a studio, presenters and a sales team selling spots to local businesses. Limits on recorded music, called needle time, decide how many records may be played, the regulator sets what the station must broadcast, and the contract comes up for renewal.
