Artists, a studio and a pressing plant. Record the song the whole country will be whistling.
A record company signs artists, records them, presses the discs and sells them to shops, and the hits pay for everything that does not sell. The law lets anyone record a published song for a fixed royalty to the composer, so the fight is for the performer and the arrangement. The market collapses in the early 1930s and comes back with rock and roll, the LP and teenagers with wages.
